  • Alternative in Agriculture Seminar Series -- Viticulture Block

Agricultural and Natural Systems Interfaces: True Stories of Grapes, Greens and Grazers
    Starting January 8, 2007
    Tuesdays 4:10 to 6:00 p.m. 101 Bowley

Agricultural and natural systems interact in a variety of ways. There are many opportunities for managing these systems for positive impacts "on both sides of the fence" but there are also many challenges. In this seminar, we will hear from diverse voices, including producers, researchers, community organizers and others. They will share their knowledge, experiences, analyses and perspectives on diverse aspects of these interactions in three important production systems: wine grapes, leafy greens and grazing livestock. We will see that these systems and their interactions with natural systems are quite different in some respects, but also share some common features and linkages.

The workshop will include four days of formal talks, discussion, field trips, and break-out sessions addressing what we know about conserving biodiversity in the world’s winegrowing regions.

The goal of the 2007 Biodiversity and Vines Workshop is initiate an exchange of ideas among students and professionals from different wine growing regions to improve our understanding and future capacity for designing and managing vineyard-dominated landscapes so that biodiversity is protected while maintaining the economic sustainability and quality of vineyards.
